UGHE, University of Rwanda Named Among Top 10 Universities in Sub-Saharan Africa

The University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) and the University of Rwanda (UR) have been ranked among the top 10 universities in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to the 2024 Times Higher Education rankings.

This year’s report assessed 129 universities across 22 countries, using a framework designed to measure their impact on addressing the region’s most pressing challenges. The evaluation was based on 20 metrics grouped into five key pillars: resources and finance, access and fairness, student engagement, ethical leadership, and Africa impact.

UGHE, based in Rwanda, climbed from eighth place last year to fourth in the latest rankings, earning the highest score in the region for student engagement. The University of Rwanda secured the sixth spot, reinforcing Rwanda’s growing reputation for academic excellence.

The University of Johannesburg in South Africa topped the rankings, excelling in the access and fairness, and resources and finance pillars. South African universities dominated the list, with four institutions in the top 10, including the top three positions.

The top 10 universities in Sub-Saharan Africa include four from Southern Africa, two from Rwanda, two from Ghana, and one each from Somalia and Uganda.
