Walk to Remember to Resume with Limited Attendance

After a four-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the annual Walk to Remember is set to resume on April 7, with a restricted attendance of 3,000 individuals.

The event, which coincides with the commencement of the 30th commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, will start at 2 pm from the Parliament buildings in Kimihurura and end at BK Arena, where a night vigil will be held.

Israel Nuru Mupenzi, the president of Peace and Love Proclaimers (PLP), the organization behind the Walk to Remember, highlighted the changes in this year’s event. “The venue has been moved from the Amahoro Stadium, which could accommodate up to 25,000 attendees, to the BK Arena, limiting the number of participants to 3,000,” he said.

Mupenzi noted that the reduction in participants is due to the capacity of the new venue, and registration for the event has already concluded.

The Walk to Remember, which began in 2009, is an initiative of youth within PLP. It serves multiple purposes, including empowering Rwandan youth and their global counterparts to stand against genocide. Through this symbolic journey, PLP aims to educate the younger generation about the atrocities of genocide, using knowledge as a preventive tool.

This year’s event will see a diverse representation, including individuals from various sectors, diplomats, and friends of Rwanda, invited to participate in the walk.
