WHO Allocates Additional $2 Million for Uganda’s Ebola Response

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released an additional $2 million to support Uganda’s efforts in combating the ongoing Ebola outbreak, bringing the total funding to $3 million in three weeks, Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced Thursday.

In a statement on the social media platform X, Ghebreyesus said the funds would further assist Uganda’s response, with WHO teams aiding surveillance, laboratory operations, logistics, infection prevention, and control efforts in hospitals and treatment centers.

Uganda declared an Ebola outbreak last month after a 32-year-old nurse at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala died from the disease. The country’s Ministry of Health reported Wednesday that nine laboratory-confirmed infections have been recorded, including one death, while at least 265 contacts of the initial case are under monitoring.

On January 30, WHO released $1 million and mobilized trial vaccines to help Ugandan health authorities contain and end the outbreak.
