Wildfires Break Out in Bejaïa as Crews Battle to Contain Blazes

Emergency crews are working to extinguish multiple wildfires that have erupted in Algeria’s northeastern Bejaïa and Tizi-Ouzou provinces, with reports indicating the flames are growing stronger and threatening nearby hamlets.

The same region was devastated by massive forest fires last July, which claimed around 30 lives. While there have been no reports of fatalities or property damage from the current fires, responders warn that the blazes are spreading rapidly due to strong winds.

Authorities also issued warnings about the ongoing high temperatures in the area, which are expected to persist through the weekend. The hot, dry conditions are likely to exacerbate the fire risk.

Northern Algeria has experienced a record heatwave this summer, with temperatures reaching as high as 48°C (118°F). The World Meteorological Organization has pointed to extreme weather events like these as a stark reminder of the need for more robust climate action.
